San Diego Therapist, Aileen Cunanan-Dwight is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing Individual, Adolescent, Family Therapy, and Marriage Counseling services throughout San Diego and North San Diego County - Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos, Sabre Springs, Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa, Escondido, Fallbrook and Ramona.

She is committed to helping clients free themselves from unhealthy patterns, improve their relationships, life circumstances and make lasting life changes. She believes that collaborative therapy can help others end self-criticism, create satisfying social relationships, and resolve conflict.

Aileen's approach is relaxed, empathetic and non-judgmental, with its basis on viewing the client from a strengths-based perspective. She utilizes psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive behavioral methods to help individuals, adolescents, couples and families develop an individualized plan specific to their needs and unique circumstances. Her treatment philosophy is based on the belief that professional therapy services can assist clients to gain the skills, insight and confidence to grow, face life's challenges and live a rewarding life.

Individual Therapy

In Individual Counseling, (or psychotherapy), a client meets one-on-one with the therapist. Such a working relationship may last for only a few sessions or may continue for much longer, depending on the needs of the client. Individual sessions may start out weekly and are then adjusted based on the client’s goals and needs, with visits progressing to bi-weekly, monthly or less often as needed, as stressors and symptoms are improved.

Although talking to a therapist for the first time may feel awkward or embarrassing, many clients access therapy services after meeting for an initial consultation. Aileen is able to effectively help clients deal with a variety of issues such as depression, anxiety or loss, among many issues, and improve their quality of life. Adolescents & Teens

Adolescent Therapy can help both the teen and their parents understand their world and perspective, which may include rebellious actions, self harm, drug abuse, school or relationship difficulties. Psychotherapy can also help the teen to effectively express their feelings and needs in more productive ways. By incorporating occasional family therapy in conjunction with teen therapy, parents also learn to better empathize and validate emotions with their teen, while providing the balance between parental guidance and fostering independence.

Family Counseling & Relationships

Family Counseling helps individuals or families to understand and improve family interactions and resolve conflicts. Family counseling can consist of the entire family, or a parent and child, or any combination or number of persons willing to participate. Treatment can usually be short term, initially attending once a week, with average length of treatment from 2 to 6 months. In some cases though, families may need a more intensive treatment plan, depending on your family's specific situation.

Couples & Marriage Counseling

In Couples Therapy & Marriage Counseling (or Pre-marital therapy) the couple meets jointly with the therapist, (as well as individually at times, especially during the initial assessment process). Psychotherapy for couples can helping both sides deal with feelings of hurt, frustration and loneliness that can overwhelm each other leading to a loss of connectedness. Aileen is able to help couples heal and rebuild, cope with the stress, anxiety and depression that often accompanies relationship problems. It is important in couples counseling for each person to gain the insight to become aware of how each person’s patterns and past may undermine what they want for their life and for those they share their lives with.

Successful marital therapy can help others to regain the safety, compassion and energy that brought them together in the first place.
